Did you know that many applications contain global hotkeys that you can set? That is to say, hotkeys that trigger application-specific actions regardless of what application is active (is in the foreground).
For instance, I can be working in Byword or Mail and quickly type up a Tweet using the Tweetbot application by pressing Control and N (⌃ + N). Likewise, I can press the Command + Alt + Control + N (⌘+ ⌥ + ⌃ +N) keyboard combination from any application to create a new Evernote note.
To see if your favorite application supports global shortcuts, display your application’s Preferences (click the application’s name on the menu and then click Preferences) and look for the Shortcuts or Hotkeys menu. The name of the menu will vary from application to application. For instance, the Globlal Hotkeys in Tweetbot are located under the General tab. You may have to do a bit of hunting around to find it.
Using global shortcuts can really a time saver. Of course, you want to ensure that the shortcut you set doesn’t conflict with other exiting global shortcuts.
