VIP, which stands for very important person in most instances, has a similar meaning in Apple Mail. Yesterday, we talked about creating Rules that can help reduce your Inbox clutter. If you receive a lot of e-mail on a daily basis, messages from important people might get lost in the clutter. This is where the VIP feature comes in handy.
When you designate someone as a VIP, any mail from that person is placed in a special VIP folder. You can also set up e-mail to notify you any time you receive a message from someone in your VIP list. This is a welcome feature to OS X and ensures that you never miss a message from someone important. Additionally, if you sync your mail with iCloud, all of your VIPs will carry over to your other devices.
Quick Guide: Use the VIP feature in Mail
- Open a message sent by someone that you want to designate as a VIP.
- Click the Star next to the sender’s name. (Click the star again to remove them from the VIP list). The VIP folder is then automatically created on the left side of your screen and includes all messages the VIP sent to you.
- To be notified when you receive a message from a VIP:
a. Choose General > Preferences from the menu.
b. Click the General icon on top of the window.
c. Click the New Message Notifications: drop-down list and choose VIPs from the list.
