Mac DVD Ripper Pro (called MDRP for short) is a user-friendly DVD Ripper program for Mac that allows you to make a backup copy of your DVD movies, using exceptional DVD decryption technology.
In the past, ripping a DVD was a two part process: Rip the movie using MDRP and then burn it to a disc or convert it to m4v using an application such as DVD Remaster. Recently, DVDSuki Software (the company who owns MDRP) purchased DVD Remaster and has incorporated its features into the latest version (version 5) of Mac DVD Ripper Pro. Now you can do it all from one app.
To rip a disc, insert the DVD in your computer’s drive, select the destination folder (if you don’t like the default) and then choose how you wish to rip your disc from the menu. There are several options to choose from. Once you’ve chosen the option you want, click the Rip button.
Convert to M4vmo
You can convert a movie to m4v format, allowing you to view it on your iPad or iPhone. To do so, click the drop-down menu (next to the number 1) and choose Rip and Convert from the menu.
Create a Backup of a Disc
You can easily create backups of a movie to either your Mac or burn it to another DVD. To create a backup to a DVD, select Full disc image and burn a copy from the menu. You will need to insert a double-layer blank DVD when prompted.
If you wish to create a backup of the DVD to your Mac, choose Full Disk Image (which will create an .iso file) or All Videos, menus and bonuses.
Rip only the Main Movie
If you don’t need want any of the extras such as previews of upcoming movies, interviews, etc., choose Main Movie Only from the rip menu. This will create a high-quality version of the film to your Mac’s harddrive, allowing you to view the movie on your computer. The Rip and Convert menu selection also only rips the main movie, but in .m4v format (rather an .iso or .dvdmedia) so you can watch it on your mobile device or in iTunes.
Playing a Disc
If the ripped file ends with the file extension .iso or .dvdmedia, you can play it on your Mac using the DVD Player application. If you prefer to play your movies on iTunes, use the Rip and Convert option to create an .m4v file, which you can then play on your iPad, iPhone or AppleTV.
Verdict
I’ve been a Mac DVD Ripper Pro customer for several years now and was delighted with the Version 5. I love the fact that this new version eliminated the need for a separate application to convert and burn movies. I was also happy to see that this version allows for up to two subtitles tracks when using Rip and Convert. If you’re looking to backup your DVD collection or wish to make your movies availale on your Mac or your mobile device, then this application is definitely worth a look.
You can purchase Mac DVD Ripper Pro directly from DVDSuki Software’s Web site at http://www.macdvdripperpro.com. It’s currently on sale for $24.95. Current MDRP customers can upgrade for $9.95.
