This morning, I just received a question via e-mail from a friend that I’ve heard asked many times over the past couple of years: How do you save a .mp3 file when using Safari?
If you click on a link for an audio file when using Safari, a mini .mp3 player displays in the Safari window. Using the File ➪ Save or Save As command however does not save the file in proper .mp3 format, but rather as a Web Archive.
To save an audio file to your hard drive from Safari, right-click the link for the file (not the mp3 player, but the actual link to the file) and choose Download Linked File As from the contextual menu.
Another option is to Option + Click the link – this will initiate a direct download of the file.
