In the post the other day, I mentioned that I reinstalled Mavericks, which can be helpful if you are experiencing certain problems since upgrading to Mavericks. Someone sent me an e-mail asking me how one goes about reinstalling the Mavericks operating system. So today’s post answers that question.
The instructions below cover how to do an install in place and not a clean install. An in-place install reinstall should not affect any of your data or user settings – but still – make sure you backup your computer beforehand. Things can and do go wrong.
Quick Guide: How to Reinstall macOS
- Make sure you have a good backup before starting.
- Repair Permissions using the Disk Utility application before starting (Select Go > Utilities from the Finder menu).
- Select >Restart from the menu.
- As the system is booting up, hold down the ⌘ + R keys on your keyboard (Command + R).
- Choose Disk Utility > Repair Disk from the menu to ensure that there are no problems with your hard drive before installing the OS.
- Select Reinstall OS X and then click Continue.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. It typically takes a couple of hours for the reinstallation to complete.
