There in a handy feature built-in to the Preview application that allows you to zoom in on any area of a preview document or image. Press the ` key (directly below the tilde ~ key) when Preview is open to display the Preview magnifying glass.
You can then drag it anywhere on your screen to magnify specific areas. Click the ` key again to turn off the magnifying glass.
