From the Get Info window, you can change the file type association so that all files of a certain type will open in a specific application. For instance, you can set all .rtf files (Rich Text Format) to open in Microsoft Word.
Sometimes you may have one specific file that you want to open with a certain application, but do not want to change the file type association for all files of that type. For instance, by default, all .css files on my Mac open in the Dreamweaver application. But I do have one file called custom.css that I always want to open in TextEdit so that I can quickly make edits to it. To change the file association for just a single file, right-click the file in the Finder window, hold down the Alt or Option key and then choose “Always Open With”. Then, choose the application from the list with which you always want to open the file. If the application you want is not in the list, click “Other” and then navigate to folder where the application is located (typically the Applications folder).
