A few days ago, I posted instructions on how to insert special characters such as the ⌘ symbol into your documents and mentioned how this works in most OS X text and word processing programs.
One exception to this however, is Microsoft Office programs. To enter special characters or symbols into office documents, you would use the Symbol Browser.
To Insert Special Characters or Symbols into Microsoft Office Documents
- Set the insertion point at the location in the document where you wish to insert your character.
- Click Insert on the menu, point to Symbol and then click Symbol Browser to display the Symbol Browser dialog box.
- Click the drop-down list in the window and choose the category of symbol you want
Or
Select All Symbols from the list
- Click the symbol you want to insert. It will be placed at the insertion point in the document.

This apparently doesn’t include all the glyphs in the character sets: I commonly use ♂ and ♀ for gender in my Latin-teachery docs. I used to be able to lock the special characters block on my screen and use that when I was doing Word, but that ability seems to have disappeared. Any clue how I can get ALL the glyphs from a font to be available?
