In the previous post, we looked at how to insert Album Artwork for CD’s that you import into iTunes. But let’s face it – the iTunes Store does not have every album and every song! So what this means is that there may be times when the iTunes store cannot find Artwork for your album – especially if the album is an older or obscure one. If this is the case, you will need to add your own Artwork.
To add Missing Artwork in iTunes:
- If the iTunes store cannot find Artwork for our CD, navigate to Google’s Web site with your Web Browser.
- Click “Images” on the Google Web page.In the Search box, type in the name for of your CD (i.e. “Awake CD”).
- When you find the desired CD cover (Album Artwork), download it to your computer.
- Copy the file to your iTunes > Album Artwork > Download folder. In iTunes, select all of the songs for the album for which you want to add artwork.
- Select File > Get Info from the menu.
- Double-click the white Artwork box.
- Navigate to the folder where the downloaded Artwork file is located (the picture that you downloaded)
- Click the file and then click Open.
Now if you are only adding artwork for one song, the procedure is a little bit different:
To add Missing Artwork in iTunes for an Individual Song:
- In iTunes, select the song for which you want to add artwork.
- Select File > Get Info from the menu.
- Click the Artwork tab on top of the window.
- Click the Add button.
- Navigate to the folder where the downloaded Artwork file is located (the picture that you downloaded)
- Click the file and then click Open.

In both cases you may also drag and drop (from a disk location) the artwork into the artwork space.
Great point Bruce! Yes, dragging & dropping directly into the Artwork window can save a couple of steps.
My ‘Artwork’ tab is greyed out. Is there any way to activate this so I can add my own artwork to songs? I have iTunes 10.7
Convert the songs to AAC version using menu inside iTunes, then you can add. I faced the same headache. Now I resolved it. Thanks to someone leaving a comment on the internet. Since you will see two copies of the same songs, you can use Command I to find out which one is the .WAV format and delete it from the album. In doing so, you can select to move them to Trash Can or keep them in your library. Either way is fine.
